Toffi-Penny and Gus It has been another tough week at the rescue centre, we are very sad to bring two heartbreaking stories. Toffi - Penny a six-year-old Border Collie and Gus an 8 year old Frenchie, both came into our care from the local pound last week. Both had spent their seven days waiting to be reclaimed by their owners before entering our care. On arrival, it was very clear that both needed desperate medical attention. Toffi- Penny was extremely bloated so had an ultrasound of her abdomen, sadly it showed there were several nodules believed to be liver tumours. She was very uncomfortable when being examined but unfortunately, due to the location of the nodules, removal was not an option. After further blood tests it also showed Toffi-Penny was also diabetic. Sadly, after discussions with the vet, Toffi- Pennys condition was already too advanced to keep her comfortable as part of our palliative care scheme so the sad decision was made to put her to sleep. Gus sadly had a plethora of medical conditions, he was suffering with a chronic skin condition, severe BOAS and painful conformational issues. Most concerning Gus was very underweight and had a large, infected mass on his neck. Due to the severity of Gus’ condition, it was sadly agreed the kindest outcome for Gus was to let him pass peacefully. It appears that both dogs may have been deliberately abandoned due to their health conditions. Both dogs were found straying in Caerphilly, an area we have recently committed to take in all the unclaimed stray from to ensure they have a place of safety after 7 days. We urge owners not to abandon your sick dog. Whilst many rescue centres are working at capacity, please reach out as our team can provide advice and support and signpost to available resources. Early intervention may have meant a different outcome for these lovely dogs. This week has been a reminder of how emotionally challenging caring for stray and abandoned dogs can be. But even if we can’t provide the happy ending we hope for, we can ensure that dogs like Toffi-Penny and Gus are treated with compassion and dignity at the end of their lives. We want to give every dog the best chance and to make sure no dog is left behind. Can you help us to be there for the next dog that needs us? Manage Cookie Preferences
